Investing in Environmental Sustainability with ISO 14001

Have you ever thought about environmental sustainability?

Environmental sustainability is concerned with whether environmental resources will be protected and maintained for future generations.

The pressure on businesses to improve green credentials and encouragement to adopt more planet-friendly ways of working has prompted companies of all sizes to review their operational strategies.

We are helping businesses nationwide to demonstrate their commitment to the environment and ensure efficiency savings through the implementation of an internationally recognised, environmental management system standard; ISO 14001.

ISO 14001 is becoming more and more popular and a favoured certification to implement alongside the management system standard for quality, ISO 9001.

Compliant is supporting businesses of all sizes to take significant steps to reduce their impact on the environment and promote sustainable practices. Recommendations include recycling, reducing the use of natural resources and using environmentally friendly construction materials.

Putting the above into action can seem daunting, especially for SMEs without a dedicated team to manage the process. That is where we come in.

We have created a 5-step process, that guides your company through certification with ongoing support to ensure you comply with increasingly stringent environmental laws and regulations.

Identification and Evaluation of Environmental Aspects:

We have also outlined the procedure for identification and evaluation of environmental aspects below.

You will need to know which parts of your business have environmental aspects, and what their impacts are. Examples of environmental aspects can include:

  • use of resources such as energy or water
  • use of recycled materials
  • air emissions to air via smoke or fumes
  • disposal of waste materials, including wastewater
  • any potential for pollution, including risks of leaks, spills, etc.

UKAS-Accredited Certification

Compliant has partnered with the British Assessment Bureau to deliver UKAS accredited ISO certifications. The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the sole body appointed by the UK Government (the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) to provide accreditation to certification bodies in the UK.

UKAS is responsible for determining, in the public interest, the technical competence and integrity of organisations such as those offering testing, calibration and certification services.

UKAS is recognised by government, to assess against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services.

The British Assessment Bureau explain that “while UKAS is the sole Government-appointed body able to accredit certification bodies in the UK, anyone is able to set themselves as a ‘certification body’ and offer ISO certification.

It is not against the law to do so and whilst the Government has issued a statement confirming its position on these organisations (who offer certification that is not UKAS-accredited) they are able to continue trading; however, as it is not in their interests to highlight the importance and relevance of UKAS-certification you should always check with the certification body before signing a contract.”

Many businesses, especially Government-related bodies and larger, more established organisations insist upon UKAS-accreditation as part of any contracts. So before investing in your ISO certification double check that it is UKAS accredited!
