Why Plastiserve decided to invest in ISO 9001 & 14001

Plastiserve, a Leeds based polymer and additives supplier, initially gained ISO 9001 & 14001 in 2022 following support from Compliant.  This established company, celebrating their 7^th anniversary in March 2023, decided to invest in the quality and environmental standards as a reflection of the maturity and evolution of their business and to demonstrate to customers their commitment to quality.

We chatted with Commercial Director, Ian Morgan, as they successfully passed their first yearly surveillance audit, retaining their ISO status.

“When we initially decided to invest in ISO 9001 & 14001 last year, we looked at a number of possible partners. After speaking with Compliant we felt they were the most reassuring and understood our business model and industry. I also felt they appreciated how much support we would require.”

The Process

Discussing the ISO process, Ian continued, “Many businesses can find the process of ISO extremely daunting, especially if they consist of a small team.  Compliant made achieving ISO 9001 and 14001 possible for us in the first place, as we would have found it too complex and time-consuming to tackle by ourselves. Compliant also make it a priority to ensure the time leading up to any surveillance audit is smooth and that, ultimately, the business is well-prepared.

“We found that a lot of information within the ISO 9001 standard wasn’t directly relevant to our business, and with Compliant’s experience and guidance, we realised it’s about adapting 9001 to fit your business and not jumping through hoops for the sake of it.  Gaining the standard has been really useful in terms of highlighting the processes we were doing correctly and also those areas that we could improve upon.

“Our surveillance audit day was so much easier than I had anticipated and, with the support we received from Compliant, we certainly didn’t need to worry.  Danielle ensured we had everything in place, we were organised and only received one ‘Opportunity For Improvement’ which we were really happy with.”

The Outcome

Plastiserve, who work with Compliant on an ongoing basis to support with the maintenance of the management systems, are looking forward to embedding the standard in a more integrated way.  Ian commented, “Once you gain ISO 9001 you can see how it can actually benefit you on a daily basis not only in terms of improving organisational capability but also putting quality first and doing things right.
