CASE STUDY: March May

March May achieves ISO 9001 re-certification with Compliant.

Why did March May initially decide to invest in ISO?

Cambridgeshire based manufacturer and supplier of magnetic drive and mechanical seamless pumps, March May have held ISO certification for several years.  Having initially gained ISO 9001 following a demand from clients, the company felt they hadn’t fully embraced the standard within the company and their culture, following a company-wide effort this is something they have now successfully achieved over the last three years.

Managing Director, Adam Nott, was keen to embed the quality culture within the business and gain the most from the standard, commenting, ‘We initially gained the standard as a lot of our larger customers stipulated this was a necessity in order to work with them, as a company that is continually looking to grow and improve our processes, we knew that ISO 9001 was something our business would benefit from.  During the last 2-3 years our team have successfully embraced the standard and embedded it’s working procedures and culture within the organisation.’

The Process

Working with Compliant since 2020, March May had their 3-year recertification audit in April 2023 which they passed with flying colours.

Carrying out a mini-audit on the business two weeks prior to their recertification, the Compliant team ensured that all pre-audit information was requested and prepared in the correct formats, this enabled the auditor to easily gain the information required without disrupting the day to day running of the business.

Adam continued, ‘We didn’t simply want the standard to be a box-ticking exercise therefore through working with the team at Compliant we ensured that all documentation was created and policies and procedures were embraced within our whole team.  As this was our 3rd year recertification audit, I had all the documentation which I sent across to Danielle at Compliant, she organised and prepared this in line with the requirements of the surveillance which meant that the day of the audit was pretty stress free.’

The Outcome

Following the 3rd year recertification audit, March May were successful in retaining their UKAS accredited ISO 9001 certification, this was testament not only to the hard work of their team but also the advance preparation in relation to documentation.

Adam was delighted with the recertification, commenting, ‘Many of our competitors also have ISO 9001 certification, however, being a UK manufacturer, we have the advantage of not having to rely on importing the majority of our products.  This was particularly advantageous following the Covid pandemic where many of our competitors experienced long lead-times due to importing from the far east.  Having the ISO certification has certainly given us a competitor advantage and enabled our business to grow during what are challenging times for many businesses.’

Internal audit manager, Danielle Barry, who supported March May through their recertification commented, ‘Adam and the team were excellent at getting together the information required, documents such as fork lift truck servicing and training records were all updated to ensure a smooth process on the day.  Due to their preparation, the team were only required by the auditor at three points throughout the day, meaning minimum disruption to their working day, this, along with our support ensured that the company could get on with running their business while we ensured a positive outcome.’
